The churches of Torsac, La Couronne, Mouthiers, Fléac, Saint-Michel, Magnac sur Touvre, Roullet and Trois Palis are some of the most beautiful Romanesque churches in the Pays d'Angoulême.
Of the more than 6000 Historic Monuments in New Aquitaine, a significant proportion concerns Romanesque buildings (period between the beginning of the XNUMXth century and the second half of the XNUMXth century).

Paul Abadie son (1812 – 1884) is an architect known in Charente for being the author of the plans for the town hall of Angoulême and the restoration of the Saint-Pierre cathedral. He is internationally recognized as the architect of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Montmartre in Paris. He notably observed, described, drew, modified, and restored these cult sites in Charente and in the bordering departments. Five of this architect-restorer's sketchbooks dating from the mid-1840s are kept in the Médiathèque de l'architecture et du patrimoine de Paris.
