The city was protected by ramparts from the Late Roman Empire, they were rebuilt and enlarged in the Middle Ages, then reinforced again at the end of the 16th century and in the 17th century.
Made useless, they were razed and the city gates destroyed from the 18th century onwards in order to allow the city to expand outside its walls.
