Eglise Saint-Cybard

The Saint-Cybard church is located in the heart of the town on the left bank of the Touvre. Its centred, almost Greek cross plan is very rarely found in the region and it is one of the church's focal points.

Listed as a Historic Monument in 1907.

The Saint-Cybard church is located in the heart of the town on the left bank of the Touvre. Its centered, almost Greek cross plan is very rarely found in the region and this singularity is one of the points of interest of the church. Its plan, consisting of a nave with two bays, chapels which open onto the arms of a projecting transept surmounted by a dome on pendant, recalls that of the church of Mainfonds in Charente. A very beautiful two-storey square bell tower with twin bays is reminiscent of that of the church of Sers.

At the start of the 1930th century, restoration and embellishment work, carried out thanks to Abbé Lescuras, saved the church from ruin. The interior is bathed in colored light through the windows made around 32-XNUMX by the Limousin master glassmaker, Francis Chigot. The latter is the author of the stained glass windows of the CCAS of Angoulême, the Limoges station...

The 5 historiated windows of the church are characteristic of Art Deco and recall Byzantine art by the hieratic character of the characters and the simplified and geometric features. The networks of leads underline the shapes and contribute to the design of the drapes (the Virgin's dress takes the form of a column).
Listed as a Historic Monument in 1907.

History, culture and heritage
After opening his first workshop in Limoges in 1907, Francis Chigot enjoyed success thanks to orders for Art Nouveau windows for shops and individuals. He also works on the restoration of windows for Historic Monuments. His intense activity in religious stained glass from the 1930s (Notre Dame de Montréal) intensified after the Second World War (restoration of windows in Poitiers, Auch, Bourges, etc.). Francis Chigot is the author of the stained glass windows of the CCAS of Angoulême, the Limoges station...
