From June 5 to 7, 2025
A must-see musical event for over 45 years, the festival Musiques Métisses showcases artists on the world stage. He continues to be on the lookout for new or established talents; this by exploring the planet in search of new nuggets. For three days, the first weekend in June, the world descends on Angoulême. These are three days of diversity, spectacle, celebration and mixing on the banks of the Charente!
Concerts, literary meetings, shows for young audiences, film screenings, exhibitions and activities of all kinds. The festival Musiques Métisses offers all the ingredients for a unique experience. A journey beyond borders and genres that is sure to cultivate your curiosity!
The event was founded in 1976 by Christian Mousset under the name Jazz en France. It is initially devoted to jazz and French and European improvised music.
Quickly, he begins to integrate popular and urban music from Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America and the Indian Ocean. It was then the first event to showcase artists from the overseas departments whose audience had until then been limited to audiences from the French overseas departments and territories.
From 1985, to make sense of the progressive integration of these musical trends into the programming, the term “Métisses Métisses” appeared on the festival poster. Then, the event took the title “Jazz et Musiques Métisses” in 1986, before becoming “Métisses Métisses” in 1990.
On the occasion of the 24th edition in May 1999, Littératures Métisses, the literary section of the festival, was born: novels, comics, short stories, essays, poetry... The books of the invited authors mix individual destinies with the collective destiny of peoples. Littératures Métisses is an invitation to literary walks with flavors from elsewhere.
Playing a pioneering role, the festival introduces the richness and diversity of current world music and their importance in the “global sound”. He also combats the idea that only Europeans, notably the Anglo-Saxons, and the Americans, have the monopoly on modernity.
Many internationally recognized musicians made their first big French stage in Angoulême: Salif Keita, Johnny Clegg, Bonga, Khaled, Cheb Mami, Compay Segundo, Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Danyèl Waro, Rokia Traoré, Kassav', Doudou N'diaye Rose, Ismaël Lo, Fal Frett, Elida Almeida…
On the occasion of the 2019 edition, the festival changes site to settle on the Esplanade des Chais Magelis and its surroundings, in a green setting on the banks of the Charente.
A unique site at the foot of the town of Angoulême!
