Nestled east of Angoulême, the Touvre springs are one of the most impressive karst springs in France. With an average flow rate of 13 m³/s, it ranks second only to the famous Fontaine de Vaucluse. This exceptional natural phenomenon attracts researchers, geology enthusiasts, and nature lovers, while also offering cyclists an idyllic setting thanks to the Flowvélo cycle path.
A giant kart in the heart of Charente
The Rochefoucauld karst, a vast underground network covering 450 km², feeds the springs of the Touvre River. This aquifer system is made up of fissured limestone dating from the Middle to Upper Jurassic period. Rainwater infiltrates this network, making its way through galleries and cavities, to emerge at the surface in the form of resurgences. The main springs are called the Bouillant, the Dormant, and the Font de Lussac.
A fragile and precious ecosystem
Beyond its geological significance, the Touvre River is a rich and fragile ecosystem. It is home to diverse flora and fauna, adapted to its aquatic environment. The lush vegetation surrounding the springs, particularly around the Font de Lussac, is a testament to the water quality and ecological balance of the site. However, this natural wealth requires constant vigilance to preserve this unique environment.

A place for walking and discovery
Freely accessible, the Touvre springs site offers visitors a peaceful setting for hiking and nature observation. Developed trails allow visitors to discover the various springs and appreciate the beauty of the landscape. The Touvre church, overlooking the site, also offers a panoramic view of the springs and the surrounding valley.
The Flowvélo: a cycle route along the water
The Flowvélo, a cycle route linking the Dordogne to Charente-Maritime, crosses the Angoulême region, allowing cyclists to discover the landscapes of the Charente, while passing by the sources of the Touvre River. This route, ranked among the most beautiful in France, offers a unique experience combining sport, nature, and heritage.
The Touvre springs are a true natural gem, combining geological richness and biodiversity. Whether you're a geology enthusiast, nature lover, or cyclist seeking new horizons, this site offers an unforgettable experience in the heart of Charente. The discovery trail, picnic tables, and rich natural environment make this a bucolic and unmissable place for everyone.
