On April 17, 1524, the navigator Jean de Verrazano discovered the Hudson Bay and named it “Land of Angoulême”, in honor of François I.

This is how New York was called “Angoulême” for a hundred years!

To mark the 500th anniversary of this formidable epic, relatively little known until recently, the City of Angoulême and its partners are offering a rich and varied program. This exceptional journey and the Renaissance – which inaugurated a new vision of humanity and the world – are highlighted. On the program: mapping, exhibitions, activities in media libraries, visits, conferences and live shows... from April to December 2024. All the cultural structures in Angoulême will explore the facets of this discovery.

Enjoy your journey in the footsteps of Verrazano!
